Why Preferred Partner Hotel Bookings Matter

When clients first come to me, one of the most common questions I’m asked is: “Why should I book a hotel through a travel advisor instead of directly online?”

It’s a fair question — particularly when hotel websites and booking platforms make travel booking so simple.  ‘Well I just book all my travel myself’  was a common theme of conversation when I introduced my company to my friends and family just over 5 years ago.

But in luxury travel, how you book can make a significant difference to your overall experience. And one of the biggest advantages of working with a luxury travel advisor is access to preferred partner programmes (or programs for my USA readers).

What is a preferred partner programme?

Preferred partner programmes are invitation-only partnerships between luxury hotels and a small number of trusted travel advisors and agencies.

These programmes exist across many of the world’s leading hotel brands including Four Seasons Preferred Partner, Virtuoso, Marriott STARS & Luminous, Belmond Bellini Club, Rosewood Elite and many others.

In simple terms, they allow advisors like me to offer clients VIP benefits that are typically not available through standard online bookings.

What kind of benefits are included?

The exact inclusions vary by hotel and programme, but preferred partner bookings often include:

  • Daily breakfast for two

  • Hotel credits (often $100 USD or more)

  • Room upgrades subject to availability

  • Early check-in and late check-out

  • Priority for upgrades and VIP recognition

  • Welcome amenities

  • Enhanced flexibility and support

At many luxury hotels, these benefits can add significant value to a stay — particularly for longer trips or family travel.

And importantly, in many cases the preferred partner rate is the hotel’s flexible best available rate, meaning clients are often paying the same as booking directly with the hotel, but with additional benefits included.

But isn’t it cheaper to book online?

Sometimes, yes. But all bookings are not equal.

There are occasions where prepaid offers, member rates or package holiday companies may appear cheaper on paper — and I’m always completely transparent about that with clients. If I genuinely believe a client would get better value by booking through a particular offer or provider, I will say so openly and recommend the best route for them.

But luxury travel is rarely just about finding the absolute lowest price. It’s about value, experience and support.

Preferred partner bookings are designed to enhance a stay from the moment a reservation is made. Hotels recognise these bookings differently because they know they are coming through trusted luxury travel networks.

That recognition can make a real difference — particularly at busy resorts, during peak travel periods or when celebrating something special.

Also, sometimes there are exclusive offers making the Preferred Partner rates significantly more valuable than any offer you’ll find online (I often have access to free nights, guaranteed upgrades, enhanced credits etc.)

Relationships matter

One of the less visible — but most important — parts of luxury travel is relationships.

Over time, I build direct relationships with hotels, sales teams and on-property management across many of the properties I recommend most often. I’m also affiliated with Departure Lounge, one of Virtuoso’s leading agencies, which gives my clients access to an exceptionally strong global luxury travel network.

In luxury travel, relationships and reputation matter. Hotels naturally place greater trust in advisors and agencies who consistently deliver valued long-term clients and work closely with them year after year.

That means clients are not simply another booking arriving through an online platform. When appropriate, I often liaise directly with hotels regarding preferences, special occasions, room requests and overall stay experience.

Of course, sometimes no advisor can guarantee upgrades or special treatment beyond programme inclusions. But having someone advocating for you before arrival can absolutely make a difference.   You may think well I can get all these benefits through other booking avenues such as Amex FHR (and often they do have similar perks), but do bear in mind that if something goes wrong, you will have the same point of contact always when you book through EVS Luxury Travel, I will probably have the Sales Manager’s direct number and often know the GM.   You won’t have to try to get through to a call centre or submit an online form and hope someone gets back to you soon.

So it’s not just about perks (but they help)

For me, preferred partner travel is ultimately about making travel feel more seamless, more considered and more personal.

It’s knowing which room categories are genuinely worth booking. Which resorts work best for young families. Which hotels feel romantic rather than simply expensive. Which suites are actually quieter. Which destinations work well together logistically. If you want an informed concierge type service to save you hours of research and one that has the right connections, then a good travel advisor is valuable even before you take into account the perks.

The booking itself is one small part of the process.

The best luxury travel experiences are thoughtfully planned

Luxury travel should feel effortless — but the reality is that the best trips are usually carefully put together behind the scenes.

Preferred partnerships are one of the ways I help clients get more from the hotels they are already considering, whilst also offering guidance, support and trusted recommendations throughout the planning process.

Whether it’s a weekend in London, a honeymoon in the Maldives or a multi-generational trip through Italy, my aim is always the same: to ensure every journey feels genuinely well looked after from start to finish.

Finally, why do hotels create preferred partner programmes?

Luxury hotels would not invest in preferred partner programmes if they did not see real value in them.

At their core, these programmes are built around long-term relationships and trust. Hotels want to work with advisors and agencies who truly understand their product, represent their brand well and consistently send clients who are the right fit for the experience they offer.

Whilst hotels do pay commission to travel agencies on preferred partner bookings and commission is how we as advisors earn our living, luxury travel advisors also play an important role in driving valuable business directly to hotels. In many cases, the cost to a hotel of acquiring a booking through a traditional online travel agency can actually be significantly higher.

Preferred partner programmes allow hotels to work more closely with trusted advisors, whilst also attracting discerning travellers who value service, expertise and experience over simply finding the lowest available rate online.

Unlike a standard online booking, preferred partner reservations are often accompanied by detailed communication around guest preferences, celebrations, room requests and overall stay expectations. Hotels know that a good luxury travel advisor is invested in ensuring a client has a successful experience from beginning to end.

Ultimately, the relationship should benefit everyone involved: the hotel, the advisor and — most importantly — the client.
